Scott Lively | Organic Beef's profile

The USDA Certified Organic Seal

Scott Lively is the president of PureLand America, a company that supplies organic beef from American farmers. The organic beef is grass-fed and USDA certified organic. The entire operation is based in the United States, from the raising of the cattle to the meat production and packaging. Scott Lively is also the author of the book “Big Beef” about the American beef industry.

Since its establishment by Congress in 2001, the National Organic Program (NOP) has been overseeing the usage of organically certified products in the United States. While the word organic is not regulated, the USDA organic seal is. The qualifications regarding use of the seal are decided and enforced by the NOP. It is a public-private partnership that helps judge the practices of corporations and farms and decides whether they fulfill the requirements.

The certification of organic meat requires meeting a number of standards on how an animal is raised. The animal is required to only consume qualifying organic feed and forage. The use of antibiotics or hormones is not allowed, and the animal must have the space and environment to display their natural behaviors.
